About Lower Lake

Lower Lake CA got its name from its location in the southern part of Lake County CA, as well as being near to the south-most shores of Clear Lake. With a population of approximately 1,300, Lower Lake is a real community. The town is 2.7 square miles in size, almost all land, with several flowing creeks.

You’ll find houses for sale in Lower Lake CA in the quaint downtown area, in the local neighborhoods, on multi-acre wooded parcels, on land well-suited for farming and gardening, on land with flowing streams, on more rugged terrain of hills and valleys, on the shores of Clear Lake. The views are often spectacular.

Lower Lake was founded in 1858. There is some real history here. The Schoolhouse Museum, built in 1877 and restored and opened as a museum in 1993, features diverse displays of Native American artifacts and objects from early pioneer life in Lake County. A restored schoolroom and Victorian parlor add to the charm and authenticity.

Another point of interest is the Lower Lake Stone Jail, made of locally quarried stone reinforced with iron. It was built in 1876, at the height of the quicksilver mining boom, as a response to rapid town growth and the urgent need for civil order. Claimed to be the smallest jail in the United States, it has been designated as a California Historical Landmark.

The Konocti Unified School District has its seat in Lower Lake, and the town has both an elementary and high school. Further, Lower Lake is only a couple miles from St. Helena Hospital Clearlake, an acknowledged provider of excellent healthcare. Buyers will want to consider Lower Lake CA real estate because of its proximity to Clear Lake, historical small town lifestyle, natural beauty, and all the services and conveniences of modern life.
